Marine Iguana Conservation: What the Current Numbers Say
The marine iguana is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, with a population estimated between 20,000 and 210,000 individuals across the archipelago, a wide range that reflects genuinely poor baseline data rather than genuine uncertainty about the animals’ presence. In 2025, all Galapagos iguana species were elevated to CITES Appendix I, the highest level of international trade protection available. The primary threats are El Niño-driven food shortages, introduced predators, and microplastic ingestion. The population fluctuates severely during El Niño years, with mortality rates of 10 to 90 percent recorded in the worst events.
